   As we live longer, we see more of our friends, neighbors and family members living with memory loss. The Memory Café that meets at Paws and Claws on the 2nd Tuesday each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm creates a welcoming, informal social gathering for people living with dementia, their families and caregivers, providing a space for interaction, learning, support and engagement. Faith in Action for Cass County, Paws and Claws and Lutheran Social Services Caregiver Support Program have been the co-sponsors of this program since it began virtually in March 2020, and then in-person in June 2021.

   The Memory Café is in need of a volunteer co-facilitator to help lead the monthly gatherings for caregivers and care receivers. The ideal co-facilitator is someone with experience working with dementia families. Faith in Action is responsible for the programming and support of caregivers. The co-facilitator should have a clear background check, have the ability to co-lead a caregiver support group, provide a safe space for caregivers to share experiences, receive emotional support, and access resources, while also offering practical advice and educational materials as part of the leadership team. This is a volunteer position unless your current employer allows you to participate in this kind of service.

   Memory loss can have a big emotional, social, psychological and practical impact on everyone, and a Memory Café program can be a big help to those living with dementia. Being active socially, physically and mentally is good for the brain! There is no cost for the Memory Cafes and no reservations are needed – just join us for a cup of coffee, treats and conversation on the 2nd Tuesdays at 10:30 at Paws and Claws in Hackensack.
