Looking Back - Do you remember when...



  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

Jan. 15, 1925

   Miss Gladys Gannon returned to her school at Bemidji after her Christmas vacation at Federal Dam.

   A Cass County feller named Coyle, once moved to the city to toil, but he soon scorned the pay of $5 per day, to get back to the county soil.

   Carl H.F. Roxin of Tobique, Alma Folwick of Longville, George E. Getchell of Hackensack and Joseph Caputa of Remer all received citizenship papers.

75 Years Ago

Jan. 13, 1950

   The Ralph Krafts have been in Hackensack while their ice has been put up out at Happiness Lodge. Thor Holmes is their caretaker for the winter.

   Miss Georgia Byersdorfer of Turtle Lake is employed at Dave’s Café in Walker at the present time.

   Durwood King and Vernon Erickson are working together at timber work at Blind Lake.

50 Years Ago

Jan. 16, 1975

   Patty Schultz left Remer on Jan. 5 to return to Crookston for the winter quarter of classes at UMC.

   Army Specialist Four Oscar Nyvall of Longville was awarded the Driver’s Badge while serving with the 296th Transportation Company in Germany.

   Navy Hospital Corpsman Ricky Ressen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ressen of Hackensack, graduated from the Naval School of Health Sciences at San Diego, CA.

 25 Years Ago

Jan. 18, 2000 

   The Cub Scout Pack 88 of Longville would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Outing Hardware and Rental for providing the use of their covered trailer to pick up their huge popcorn order.

   Alice Lohse married John A. Gilmer on Dec. 25, 1937, and they moved to a farm near Remer. She was also employed as a cook at Deer Haven Supper Club for many years. She died Jan. 12th.

   Lillian Gale, 83, of Sugar Point died Dec. 28th. She was born on Bear Island. She was well known for her birch bark basket-making skills.
