Looking Back - Do you remember when...



  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

Feb. 19, 1925

   Mr. Theo. Tobiason of Remer was a caller at Federal Dam. He formerly had a hardware store here.

   Callers at the mill and camp Sunday were the L.O. Fink family, Mrs. Jim Shepard and sons Tracy and Howard, Theo. Albrecht, Harry Zaske, Pearl Swartout and R. Felton and family.

   Avery Emery and Ray Parks of Pine Lake made two trips to Walker Monday with wood.

75 Years Ago

Feb. 17, 1950

   A farewell party for Eugene Bushard of Remer was held Thursday evening. He will leave soon for the Cities where he will attend barber school.

   Mrs. Ben Hinsz and baby, Ray Allen came home to Brevik from the Walker hospital.

   Mrs. Coleman Austin, formerly Dorothy Jordan, was honored with a bridal shower Friday evening at the VFW hall.

50 Years Ago

Feb. 20, 1975

   Mrs. Claude Railsback from Hackensack is the only woman to ride the entire 200 miles from Anoka to Hackensack as the Sno Bos and Winter Knights Snowmobile Clubs generated pledges for cancer research.

   The Northernaire Recreational Club met on the 8th at the Norm Nicholson home at Mule Lake and presented a program on conservation. Six new members joined the club.

   The Remer Arts and Crafts Club will sponsor Jeanette Bruckbauer in the Cancer Research Snowmobile marathon.

 25 Years Ago

Feb. 22, 2000 

   Edith Enger, 78, was born to Moses and Lila (Bundy) Zaffke. She was a graduate of Backus High school and lived in Backus and Hackensack most of her life. She died Feb. 11th.

   Vanessa Manders, 12, took third place honors in the State of Minn. Jaycee Sponsored Super Shots Contest held Feb. 5. She is the daughter of Jay and Sue Manders, Longville.

   February is “I Love To Read “month at Remer/Longville schools. Storytellers Don Nusom and Terry O’Brien, performers at White Oak will tell some tall tales.
