Looking Back - Do you remember when...



  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

Feb. 12, 1925

   Mr. Whipple, who resides near Pipe Island, has purchased a tract of land on the South shore and intends to put in a boat livery.

   Lots of children in Federal Dam are out of school on account of whooping cough.

   A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Riley Ford Sunday evening, Feb. 8th with Dr. Button in attendance.

75 Years Ago

Feb. 10, 1950

   A farewell party in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pound was held in Remer as the Pounds are leaving for the Cut Sioux US Ranger Station where he has been working since July.

   Archie Underhill, 62, was buried at Longville, He came to Cass County in 1910, first to Laporte and later moving to Longville and engaging in farming.

   Norman Dauber, George Wolford and Jerome Eiber of Blind Lake were Pine River shoppers Tuesday.

50 Years Ago

Feb. 13, 1975

   Area residents of Hackensack extend their appreciation to Keith and Lois Dupre for the lovely times we have had on Wednesday potlucks and 500.

   Several women attended a baby shower for Cheryl Chalich in Longville on Thursday evening.

   The roof of the new warehouse and showroom of Remer OK Hardware collapsed under the weight of the snow. A new building is under construction and will be finished soon.

 25 Years Ago

Feb. 15, 2000 

   The Remer Soo Line Depot is making a comeback thanks to a grant approval from the District 5 Regional Development Commission. Approval needing state and federal blessing is for $520,000 of the estimated $638,000 project.

   First place in the Remer/Longville Spelling Bee went to Beth Raines with Heidi Belgum as the alternate. Beth will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee next month.

   Coach Bachmann watched senior team leader Joel Pepin score his 1000 point in a loss to Greenway and then took Friday off to join his wife Kristi in the birth of their first child, a son, Brook.
