Looking Back - Do you remember when...



  Information for 100, 75, 50 and 25  year news briefs was researched and gathered by Renee Geving and Cec McKeig from Cass County newspaper archives at the Cass County Historical Society.    

100 Years Ago

April 16, 1925

   Andy Lego, Ben Lego and Gorman Gannon drove to Waubun Friday to visit and returned Sunday.

   Harry McKeebe and Geo. Sweet quit work at the sawmill Thursday to take up some other employment and Harry Zaske is helping out at the mill.

   A Cass County feller named Green, climbed a ladder to put on a screen; when up near the top, he let the thing drop, and it hit him right square on his ”bean”

75 Years Ago

April 14, 1950

   The second week in April brought an additional 9 ½ inches of snow and temperatures down to -1. Twenty inches of snow have been recorded since March 31st.

   Ice thickness in Leech Lake varies from 36 to 52 inches. A conservative 36 inches is about 10 inches more than normal. A sudden thaw with the additional snow received this week will give the county record-breaking bad road conditions to cope with. 

   Men from Turtle Lake formed a group and are remodeling the old schoolhouse to be used as the town hall and community center.

50 Years Ago

April 17, 1975

   Cletus McNeeley is well known in the area as he was principal of the Federal Dam school before coming to Longville where he was principal for at least 10 years,

   The Ray Krals of Remer went to Fargo Sunday to attend the Steiger Tractor Company open house where their son, Ray, Jr., works as manager of the salvage department.

   Mr. and Mrs. Howard Shaefer and son moved from Baby Lake to their new home on Pleasant Lake.

 25 Years Ago

April 18, 2000 

   Dan Winger and Craig Waddell of Remer will use their underwater camera to verify findings of sunken, old growth timber.

   Members of the American Legion Auxiliary of Post 346 of Remer have completed lap robes, bibs, bed jackets and slippers for the veterans in the Veteran Hospital in St. Paul.

   Chandler Watson was born March 10th to parents Mike Watson and Jenny Johnson of Remer.
