Storm Volleyball falls to Cherry and BigFork

The Hill City/Northland Storm volleyball team hosted Cherry Monday, Oct. 7 and fell in 4 sets, 26-24; 17-25; 22-25 and 17-25. Head Coach Stacey Wake stated “although the storm took a loss, it took a backseat to a great cause. The team sold T-shirts, wristbands, grab bags and gift baskets with all proceeds going to the American Breast Cancer Foundation. As coaches, we always preach that the game is bigger than one individual and I think that same message can go beyond the walls of the gyms. Together we can make a difference in somebody’s life. I think it’s important for our young athletes to understand that. It was a special night for our program and  a big shout out to Tina Harcey for making all our T-shirts and for putting so much work into making the night run smoothly.” A total of $934 was raised on Monday for this great cause.

Walking away with 7 kills and 7 assists from the game was Bella Dunham; Charity Berg had 6 kills and 2 ace serves; while Nora Wake contributed with 6 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace serve and Taylor Washburn ended the evening with 3 kills and 2 ace serves.

The girls then turned around and hosted BigFork on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and walked away with a loss in three, 21-25; 20-25 and 21-25. Wake said “it was a tough conference matchup saw us facing BigFork for the second time in a little over a week. We played them in the first round at their home tournament. This time it was a totally different game. Defensively we adjusted a lot better, blocking a lot of their quick sets at the net and digging up more of their hits. We also did a lot better job of covering our hitters so their blocking didn’t hurt us as much. As a coach, you just want to keep seeing improvements and hope that you’re playing the best ball you can as you head into playoff season.”

Stat leaders for the evening were: Maddie Barnes with 4 ace serves, 2 assists and 4 digs; Ashlyn Schwarz with 7 kills and 1 block; Charity Berg with 5 kills and 15 digs and Taylor Washburn with 5 kills, 3 ace serves and 13 assists.

With the regular season wrapping up on Monday, Oct 14 the girls will prepare for playoffs, which begin the week of Oct. 21. Stay tuned for dates and times or check out the schools website at isd118.k12.mn.us.
