Vernon “Vern” Chenevert

b. 1929 d. Aug. 13, 2023


 Vernon “Vern” Chenevert, age 93, of Remer, MN, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2023, surrounded by family, at Lakewood Health Systems in Staples, MN. 

Vern was born in 1929 to Philip and Mabel Chenevert in Ft. Ransom, ND. His family moved to Outing, MN when he was four years old. He attended a one room elementary school in Outing then Crosby School for a couple years before attending Remer High School where he met his future wife, Mary Lou Bloyer. After graduating from high school, Vern logged and worked in the mines for a few years. Vern and Mary Lou married on September 2, 1950, and shortly after marriage they started their family. He started working for the DNR fisheries in 1958 in Grand Rapids, MN. He transferred to work at Spire Valley near Outing but transferred back to Grand Rapids Division where he worked until his retirement after 32 years in 1990. After his retirement, he worked for the University of Minnesota for four years in a fish research program.

   Vern was a very active man and enjoyed staying busy. He served as mayor of Remer, harvested wild rice, and was a buyer for Gibbs Wild Rice Co. in Deer River, MN. He was a volunteer on the Remer Ambulance for over 20 years, served on the Church Council, played softball, baseball, and basketball for the town teams, and was the oldest surviving member of the Remer Congregational Church. His interests included hunting, fishing, sports, and spending time with family and friends reminiscing about the good old days. He was very dedicated to his church, family, and friends. Vernon and Mary were married 72 years and raised four children.  

   Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Mabel Chenevert; siblings, Arthur Chenevert; Phylis Fletcher; Edwin Chenevert; and daughter in law, Kathy Chenevert.  

   He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Chenevert of Pine River, MN; sons, Donald Chenevert of Hoyt Lakes, MN, David (Cheryl) Chenevert of Sebastian, Fl, Tim (Lori) Chenevert of Aitkin, MN; daughter, Susan (Jay) Manders of Crosby, MN; 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.

   Visitation will be at Remer Congregational Church on Vern’s birthday, Friday September 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. followed by the 12:00 p.m. memorial service. Rev. Bruce Pound will officiate. The burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Remer.
