The last time Northland won the Northern Lakes conference was in 1980. Games still had quarters, the three point line was yet to be implemented, and a couple of rookies named Magic and Bird were taking the NBA by storm.
The Eagles ended that streak with a 70-31 victory over Bigfork in a game that saw their stingy defense hold the Huskies to 13 first half points and 0 for 12 on 3-pointers.
“Going into the year one of our goals was to win the conference and we got that done” said coach Chris Carlson. “Now we can focus on locking up a top seed for the Section 7A playoffs”.
Leading the way for the Eagles was Alec Wake with 29 points and eight Rebounds. Aiden Carlson had 17 and Nolan Carlson dished out 12 assists.
Northland went into the Walker contest hoping to avoid a letdown after clinching the conference. Once again, their defense was overpowering, producing a 65-21 victory. With 6 minutes remaining in the second half, the Eagles had limited the Wolves to only 13 points. Alec Wake led the effort with 10 steals to go along with 25 points. Aiden Carlson had 16 points and nine assists while Nolan Carlson tossed in 10 to round out the players in double figures.
The Eagles face Cook County on Saturday and will play in Hill City on Thursday.
