   Northland Remer Education Minnesota announces Mike Horn as the Northland Community Schools Teacher of the Year 2023.  Mr. Horn has provided for the educational needs of District 118 for twenty-three years.  He is a rock-star Social Studies teacher and a leader in our school.  He has been selected to receive this honor by his Northland family for his service and dedication to both the art of teaching and collaboration with parents, students, staff and the community.

   Mike Horn was instrumental in Northland receiving the Minnesota History Grant for ten years.  He advised countless History Day projects and competitions, with students going to state several times.  The field trips, for all students 6th and 9th grade, had a positive impact on the students in our community.  Also, he was the advisor for both student council and knowledge bowl for many years.

   Mike has had many leadership roles at Northland. In his 23 years, he served as the Indian Education Teacher Representative, the High School Building Representative and the former Union President. He was a member of the Social Studies Curriculum Team and Staff Development Committee. Additionally, he started the Marzano Mentor Program at Northland and provided peer coaching to his colleagues.

   The relationships between Mr. Horn and his students are outstanding. Many parents have positive things to say about his teaching style and love of learning he instills in students, many who do not really like school but truly enjoy going to his class each day.  Mike says, “The best part of my day is the students he serves growing into wonderful people.”
