Wildcats and Spartains hot shooting proves too much for Eagles

With the regular season winding down and hoping to secure a 6 or 7 seed in the Section 5A tournament, the Eagles hit the road to face LaPorte and Naushwauk- Keewatin.

On Tuesday, February 11, the boys travelled to LaPorte to face the Wildcats. The teams came into the game with similar records but on this night the hot shooting Wildcats were too much for the Eagles. The Eagles could not contain LaPorte forward Austin Moss, who scored a career high and school record 46 points in the game.

During the first half the Eagles were able to counter most of the hot shooting and were only down by the score of 43-31. Most games a team is unable to keep their hot shooting for a whole game but on this night the Eagles were not so fortunate, as the Wildcats continued in the second half as the precision shooting of Moss spread to his teammates. The Eagles were able to get the lead down to eight on a couple of occasions early, but the Wildcats would knock down some 3-pointers to swell the lead once again. Over the final 12 minutes the Eagles were outscored 34-13, to suffer a very lopsided 85-55 loss.

Gary Gross led the team with 14 points with two others scoring in double figures.

Scoring- Greene-1, Likens-7, Wake-1, Nornberg-11, Gross-14, Wicks-9, Perkins-12.

Friday had the boys in Nashwauk to face the Spartans. The first 10 minutes of the game was played very closely with the Eagles down by one at 20-19. Over the remaining eight minutes of the first half the Spartans would go on a 20-8 run to lead at the break 40-27.

The second half continued with the Eagles unable to narrow the gap much and with just over 3:30 to go in game were down 64-44. A late rally brought the score close as the Eagles would outscore the Spartans 16-4 over the last few minutes to make the final 68-60.

The Eagles were led by Zak Nornbergs 18 points, which included 5 3-poimters.

Scoring- Likens-13, Wake-2, Nornberg-18, Gross-14,Wicks-7, Perkins-6.

Eagles- 27 33 60

Spartans- 40 28 68

The Eagles record sits at 5-15 on the season. With one remaining game in the regular season left, a road game in Hill City on Friday February 21, the frustrations the team has felt throughout the season can be very much lessened with a good performance and win against the rival Hornets.[[In-content Ad]]
