"Well regulated" is not "no regulation"
To the Editor,
Remember, in the days the Constitution was written, we did not have a large standing army and a militia was needed to protect the country from invasion and Indian attacks on our frontier. Today the militia has been replaced by the National Guard where the weapons are supplied by the government and kept in armories under lock and key.
"Well Regulated" does not mean no regulations as desired by the NRA. We already have some regulations. In order to protect ducks we must put a plug into the magazine of our shot guns so that it can only contain 2 shells with a 3rd round in the chamber. It takes time to take a new round from our pocket and insert it one at a time into the magazine. I have never heard one complaint abut this regulation. Hunters are willing to give up some of their rights to protect ducks. I believe some conservatives are willing to give up some of their rights to protect children. There was some controversy about the elimination of lead pellets to help protect the environment but eventually steel was accepted.
It would be far more useful if gun owners got together to agree on reasonable regulations rather then blaming the problem on "leftist organizations, politicians and their followers". Unfortunately too much money is made by those in the gun industry to want to solve a very serious problem. Profits should not be more important then peoples lives.
Except for a few exceptions we don't need box or round magazines for our selves so weapons can be loaded fast. We don't need armor piercing ammo. What do we need or don't need should be open to discussion. To see guns in our churches, colleges and schools, hospitals and clinics is the last thing we need in a free country.
It is time to balance the second amendment rights for gun owners against the basic rights for a child to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness/" Since these rights come from our Creator I believe they trump the second amendment.[[In-content Ad]]
