Shirley was born January 18, 1932 in Outing, Minnesota to Walter and Kathryn (Tabaka) Andrews. She grew up in Remer, graduating from Remer High School. Following high school she attended college in Bemidji where she met and married Ed Byrne. Ed taught school in Hackensack, Echo, and in 1952 they moved to Walker where she remained her entire life. In 1966 she began working at Woodrest Nursing Home as the office manager. In 1972 she became the administrator, a position she held for 27 years, until her retirement in 1994.
Shirley's first priority was her family and always looked forward to spending time together. She loved sports, and she loved to fish, especially if "shore lunch" was part of the day. She also was an avid golfer and "cutthroat" bridge player. Being active civically was also very important to Shirley. She was one of the first women members at Tianna, and the first woman president of Rotary. Shirley will be remembered as an honest and tenacious business woman and mother who always strove to do her best at whatever life brought her.
Shirley is survived by her children; Tim (Mary) Byrne and Patty (Tom) Knight, six grandchildren; Kyle, Tim (Holly), and Ann Byrne and Kate, Taylor, and Sarah Knight, one great grandson Ethan, seven siblings; Bob (Donna) Andrews, Bette Swankier, Darlene (George) Coffman, Barb Nelson, Kay (Duane) Boogaard, Patty (Dick) Engen, Jim (Bridget) Andrews, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands; Edward Byrne, Charles Kureth, Jack Ziegler, and sister Janice.
Funeral Mass was held Monday, August 22, 2011 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Walker with Fr. Francis Kabiru officiating. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, in Walker.
