Born in Walker, MN, Roy graduated from Walker High School in 1956, attending school in Los Angeles, CA for several winters so his parents could work during World War II. He attended both Bemidji University and the University of Minnesota. In 1957 he was given an honorable discharge from the Army after being injured on the docks of Huddle's Resort. He was proud of those who serve and have served our country.
God had other plans for Roy as he was called to serve children, families and all who sought relaxation and recreation on the shores of Leech Lake. Roy has the distinction of having trained over 6000 people to water ski. His tireless times in the boat pulling tubers and skiers, 5 days a week for hours each day, was one of his most cherished activities. But whether it was organizing turtle races, fishing contests, hot dog roasts, bingo, dances or the biggest small town 4th of July parade in the state, he took time to meet people.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 35 years, Kay; daughters Tammy (Mike), Kim (Brian), Tracy (Kyle), Kim (Tim), and son Kelly. Grandchildren: David (Emily) McGee; Daniel (Chelsey) McGee; Michelle (Andy) Carstensen; Joshua Hanson; Alexandra, Brady, and Jordyn Perlich, Courtney, Carissa, Zachary and Tyler Kraus; Kody Lubecke; Kacy and Peyton Clark. Great Grandchildren: Brianna, Aidan, and Cole Carstensen; Sloane and Callum McGee; Harper Perlich; and Logan McGee. Finally, his gentle sidekick 'Toby' is also missing Roy.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 9th from 5-8 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker, MN followed by sharing and fellowship at the Lazy Moon Backstage Bar located at Moondance. The Celebration of Roy's life will be held the following day, on December 10th, at 11 a.m. at the church following a 10 a.m. visitation.
