Robert was born on December 13, 1928 in St. Paul, MN the son of Carl Paul and Anna Clara (Crofcheck) Gerber. He grew up and attended school in St. Paul graduating from Monroe High School in 1945. He worked as a machinist for Western Electric before enlisting into the US Army in Dec 1950. He served a three year enlistment with over 2 years in Germany with the occupational forces. He belonged to a Highway Patrol Company and he was a trained MP. He was honorably discharged in Oct of 1953. He returned to St. Paul and began working for the Milwaukee Railroad where he became a conductor. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Kaehn in St. Paul in 1967. They resided in Cottage Grove for many years. He owned and operated Maplewood Hardware and the Ambassador Bar in St. Paul. He retired in 1986 and then he moved to Thunder Lake near Remer, where he has resided since. Marjorie passed away in 1994.
Bob enjoyed cruising on Thunder Lake with his Century boat. He was also a skilled sawyer on his band saw mill. He also enjoyed building and remodeling. He liked feeding and watching the birds and squirrels. He enjoyed dogs.
Bob was a very involved and very devoted member of his church - St. Paul's Catholic Church in Remer. He volunteered with church maintenance and building projects. He was affectionately known to many friends as "Builder Bob."
He is survived by his care giver and companion - Donna Mae Andersen of Thunder Lake - Remer; and her family. His step daughter - Laurie (Eugene) Husnick of St. Paul, MN; His longtime friends - Steve and Cheryl Junker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; His sister - Jean Ann Gerber Lupkins; his niece and nephew - James and Julie Lupkins; His wife - Marjorie Gerber; his step son - Robert Johnson and his best friend - Herbie Bergman.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 12:00 PM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Remer, MN. Visitation was held for one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Interment will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery in Remer. Military Honors will be provided by the Longville VFW Post #772 Honors Team. Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com. Arrangements are being handled by the Cease Family Funeral Home of Park Rapids, MN.
