WALKER-Cass County Engineer David Enblom obtained county board approval Tuesday to patch several paved roads this summer to prolong the life of those roads.

Patches on these roads will range in length from 10 feet to close to 1,400 feet. Also approved was paving for the driveway at the new county highway garage being built this summer at Pine River.

Roads scheduled for the patches include County State Aid Highway 1 near Pillager Lake and east of Pine River, CSAH 18 in East Gull Lake city limits, County Road 104 near Casino and County Road 114 and County Road 171 near Pine River.

Reimbursement paid back to the county for storm damage clean-up last year and a 2016 state highway aid increase will cover these paving repairs this summer, Enblom said.

The patches are expected to cost about $350,000

Routine road maintenance work the county plans to do this summer will include calcium chloride treatment on some heavily traveled gravel roads, lane striping on some paved roads, crack sealing and roadside mowing and spraying.

The county adds new gravel to gravel roads on about a five-year rotation. Roads scheduled for new gravel this summer are CSAH 42 and 46 and County Road 118, County Road 119, County Road 120 and County Road 173 (Deep Portage).

Paving construction projects Cass plans for this summer are CSAH 1 from CSAH 24 to County Road 107 and by Pillager Lake, CSAH 24 from Highway 64 to CSAH 1, CSAH 75 from Highway 2 to the county line, CSAH 78, CSAH 29 from CSAH 78 to the county line, Municipal State Aid Highway 205 in Walker, County Road 107, County Road 116 from Highway 87 to Highway 371 and County Road 150 from CSAH 75 to the county line.

New equipment the highway department plans to purchase this year includes one motor grader with a packer, two tandem trucks with plows, two loader backhoes, two shop trailers and a boom mower attachment.

Enblom told the county board he will seek to purchase a packer for all new graders, because it is proving cost effective to keep gravel from blowing off roads, especially those not treated with chloride.
