Dick was born on May 14, 1926, in Sioux City, IA to Clayton and Lucille (Campbell) Speer. Dick was a graduate of Leeds High School. He served in the US Navy from May 21, 1944 to May 15, 1946 as a Motor Machinists Mate 2nd Class. He served at the Farragut Idaho Naval Training Center and then on board the USS Orestes and USS Portanus during World War II.
On returning home, Dick asked Shirley McGuire for her hand, and they were married May 13, 1948. They made their home in Illinois where Dick worked as foreman for PIE, a trucking company, and then for Flash Cab Company in Chicago as shop foreman. They moved to Longville MN in 1977 where he opened and operated Dick's Hwy 200 Garage for many years, only closing because of the loss of his eyesight.
Dick is survived by his sons Doug (Terri), Tom (Elaine), and Bob (Peggy); daughter Karen Wheeler; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and his loving dogs Boof and Bullet. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Shirley.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Longville Community Church on November 16 with a gathering of family and friends at 12 Noon and the service at 1:00 p.m. A light lunch will follow.
