Penny Wars for PAWS & CLAWS
To the Editor,
Last year, PAWS and CLAWS Animal Shelter received the 4H Ambassadors "Penny Wars" donation for the Capital Campaign to build an animal shelter for Cass County. It was greatly appreciated! I am certain PAWS and CLAWS will be in close communication with area 4H groups once the shelter is built.
Mary Sarah Sauber is the youth reporter for the 4H newsletter. I would like to reprint her article on "Penny Wars" and how the area communities and fair attendees can help raise money for worthy causes in the area.
"At the 2011 County Fair you may have noticed that in the 4-H diner there were 6 boxes and sign above them that read "Penny Wars". Penny Wars is a tradition that has been around for several years. The 4-H county ambassadors count the money at the end of the fair. The 6 boxes each stand for a barn or group at the fair; horse barn, poultry/rabbit barn, cattle barn, 4-H building, goat/sheep barn and the volunteers. People "vote" for their favorite barn by placing pennies inside the box. Silver coins such nickels and dimes, as well as dollar bills count towards that barn negatively. At the end of the fair, money is counted and the winning barn receives a trophy.[[In-content Ad]]
The money is donated to a cause of the ambassador's choice. In former years it has been given to organizations such as the local food shelf's and toys for tots. This year the group made a total of $80.00 from the Penny Wars contest. When deciding where to donate this year's money, the club thought about a subject close to home: animals. Most of the youth leaders either own and/or show animals at the county fair and it seemed so fitting. We selected a new animal shelter that is being built in the Hackensack area called PAWS and CLAWS. The money will be given in order to help the building process and the stocking of necessities once it has been built."
Participating in a 4H club is a fantastic experience for our youth! Please have some competitive fun and donate to the "Penny Wars" at the Cass County fair.
PAWS and CLAWS Animal Shelter is in its Capital Campaign drive to build a shelter for Cass County. We are one of the few counties in the state without a shelter and it is time that changed.
