Panthers and Hornets no problem for Lady Eagles

The Lady Eagles were riding high after a big win over Greenway a week ago and the team was feeling good about their consistency on both ends of the court. On Saturday, Jan. 16, the girls hosted the Onamia Panthers. The Eagles were able to jump on top early, leading 28-23 at the half and extended that lead out to 16 at the final buzzer 67-51.

"The entire team played a solid game. It feels like the girls are starting to mesh better and play more consistently," stated Head Coach Jenny Kovall.

Kristine Johnson was hitting on all cylinders and posted 28 points, nine steals and seven assists. Maddy Shepard put up 20 points with four boards and Kali Wake rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and eight rebounds.

After a couple of strong wins the girls hot hands cooled off on the road trip to Chisholm.

"We just didn't play very well, we were the better team but it just didn't show tonight. Our field goal percentage was way off, we had opportunities but we just couldn't get the ball to fall." Commented Coach Kovall.

Wake posted the best numbers with a double-double effort of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Shepard followed with 16 of her own to go with five boards and four take-aways and Johnson added 11 points, five rebounds and five steals.

With the loss to the Bluestreaks fresh in their minds the Eagles were able to refocus their efforts when they traveled to Hill City the following night. Johnson and Wake would have the hot hands on offense leading the girls to a 51-40 conference win over the Hornets.

Wake added a second double-double in as many days with 16 points 18 boards - going 8-8 from the charity stripe. Johnson put up 22 points, five steals and six rebounds; Shepard added 11 points and six boards.

"I'm really proud of Kali's hard work on the boards, she's not real tall, she just out-hustles everyone!" Commented Coach Kovall.

The girls welcome Nashwauk/Keewatin tonight (Tuesday), then host the WHA Wolves on Monday. JV games begin at 5:45 p.m. with varsity games following.[[In-content Ad]]
