Our students do deserve better

To the Editor,

Our students deserve better than to have revenue cut by the state. They deserve better than for the state and federal governments to continually underfund mandated programs. They deserve better than state legislators continually deferring state aid (your tax dollars); thereby requiring school districts to pay interest on borrowed money, all in the interest of balancing the state budget. They deserve the best teachers and support staff. They deserve safe, efficient, comfortable facilities. They deserve to have reliable transportation to get them to and from school. They deserve to have access to the technology needed to be successful in the next generation. They deserve to have the support of community. Our students deserve to not have personal politics hinder access to the opportunities, the experiences, and the best possible chance to learn, grow, and become productive members of society, and members of their very own community.

Just as in any business, community program or household, no school district is perfect and has room for improvements. We may not always agree with the way a teacher handles a situation, or with school board decisions, or the way administration implements policy. This is normal and is to be expected; what is not normal, and what is not to be expected is abandoning our students... abandoning OUR school district. A school district is more than any one person or group. When we hear someone say "Go Eagles!" or see a sign that says "This is Eagle Country," we don't think about the administration or the board, we think about Remer, Longville, Boy River, Federal Dam, Swatara, Sugar Point, Shovel Lake, Outing... it's the people in these communities that make up OUR school district. We don't live in Deer River, Hill City, Grand Rapids or Walker. Dissolving our district and sending our students to those districts is not an easy answer, not a cost effective answer, and not the best option for our students or communities. Plain and simple... it's not an option. We want Northland Community Schools to be a feared competitor, a respected partner, and a leader in education, community involvement, and school spirit. Whether your children attend Northland Community Schools or not, you are part of this district and we need each and every one of you in order to succeed.

The "Vote Yes Committee" is not asking you to vote for an unreasonable tax increase. We're not asking for more than the school needs to be successful. The district is in need of a continuation of the current operating referendum to avoid further cuts, an additional amount to maintain busses and keep up with technology, and funding to operate the very vital pre-school and early childhood programs. The additional amount equates to about a cup of coffee per month per household. We are asking you to help keep the school at its current level of excellence as well as grow programs and opportunities during this economic down time so we can emerge on the other side stronger, healthier, and ahead of the curve.

We are asking you to invest in YOUR school district and in YOUR community by voting yes on November 6th. Vote Yes because our students DO deserve better.

Northland Community Schools "Vote Yes Committee."
