Operating an ATV in the City of Longville

To the Editor,

Local law enforcement authorities have been receiving numerous questions regarding the legality of ATV operation within the City of Longville. I would like to direct you to Chapter 84 of the Minnesota State Statutes pertaining to ATV regulations. Minnesota law prohibits the operation of Class I ATVs on County and State roadways. Minnesota State law allows the operation of Class II ATVs on the shoulder or extreme right hand side of county, township or city streets, if not prohibited by local laws. Class II ATVs may NOT be operated on the shoulder of state trunk highways.

The definition of Class I and Class II ATVs may be found in the Off-Highway Vehicle Regulations handbook or onlin at the MN DNR website.

As the law pertains to Longville, there is no legal access into the city via county or state highways by ATV, including Cass Co. Rd. 5 and Co. Rd. 7; and Minnesota Trunk Hwy. 84.

As of Aug. 9, 2010, there have been 16 ATV reported fatalities this year, compared to a total of 14 ATV reported fatalities within Minnesota in 2009.

You may review more detailed ATV lasw at the Minnesota DNR website: www.mndnr.gov/ohv or you may call 1-888-MINNDNR to ask for information.

Also, I suggest you check with local laws and ordinances before you ride, as they may differe around the state.
