Northland Eagles snap early season slide in Floodwood Tournament
In the first game, the boys suffered from a shallow bench and foul trouble starting out the game resulting in a 64-55 loss to the Polar Bears.
"We had a short bench heading into the game so we had to stay out of foul trouble...that didn't happen and Floodwood took advantage at the end of the first half to surge to an 11 point lead. We came back and won the second half by 2 points which was what we were looking for, improvement!" Said Coach TIm Vagle.[[In-content Ad]]
Chris Scheidt led the Eagle offense with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Matt Johnson played 34 and a half minutes, adding 11 points and 7 boards. Freshman Jordan Perkins provided a needed spark off the bench and with solid play added 4 points. Patrick Kemper also chipped in 6 points and 11 rebounds in the Eagle cause.
In Tuesday's action the boys faced off against the Mesabi Academy. With improved defense, the Eagles allowed only four scorers from the Bulldog side of the court while Johnson and Scheidt controlled the game inside the paint resulting in a 55-31 lopsided victory for the Eagles.
"It was nice to snap our 3 game skid. Scheidt and Johnson really controlled the inside game and we were able to try some different things on offense and defense which will help us down the road. We took home the third place trophy and headed into the holiday break on a good note," said Coach Vagle.
Scheidt again led the offense with 24 points and 13 boards followed by Johnson with 18 points and 12 rebounds including going 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. Trey Kelley and Kemper added 4 points each while Taylor Smith added 3.
The Eagles will attempt to continue their winning ways tonight (Tuesday) when they travel to Sebeka to play WHA in the first round of the Sebeka Tournament, game time is 6 p.m. The follow up game will be Wednesday TBD.
