The Northland High School baseball team posted 4 wins and a solo loss to Deer River in last week's hardball action.

On April 23rd, the Eagles were on the road against Mesabi East. The boys scored early carding 3 runs in the first inning and adding another 8 in the top of the third in route to a 11-8 win over the Giants.

Dakota Kendall went the distance for the Eagles giving up 8 hits, striking out 7 with 10 walks in 7 innings of work. Devin Mulligan went 3 for 3 with a rbi, Cody Lilyquist went 2 for 4 with a rbi and Ryan Horner went 2 for 5 with a rbi.

The next afternoon had the Eagles playing against the Hill City Hornets for the third time in as many weeks with similar results in cold and rainy weather, a 7 to 5 win.

Ryder Pepin started on the mound for the Eagles and held the Hornets scoreless for the first 5 innings and closing out the game in 6 1/2 with 9 strikeouts. Horner went 2-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Mulligan went 2-3 with 3 rbi's, and Lilyquist led the way of offense with a 3 for 3 effort.

The Eagles matched up against the Deer River Warriors in the championship game of the Deer River Early Bird Tournament. Six free passes came back to haunt the boys as they fell to the Warriors 7-4.

Kevin Murphy got the start and went the distance for the Eagles allowing 7 earned runs on 11 hits.

Freshman Patrick Kemper went 2 for 3 and scored 3 of the Eagles 4 runs. Horner and Kendall had 2 hits each.

"This was another close game against Deer River, it sets up a big conference game on May 18 which very well could decide the conference championship." Said Coach Tim Vagle.

Last Monday the McGregor Mercuries traveled to Northland for a section matchup that left the Merc's wondering what happened as the Eagles handed them a 14-2 thumping.[[In-content Ad]]Mulligan got the start and with only 5 innings of pitching carded a pair of strike outs with 2 earned runs.

The Eagles took full advantage of Merc miscues scoring 5 runs in the third and another 5 in the fourth inning to put the game away.

Kendall went 3 for 4 at the plate scoring 4 runs, Mulligan went 2 for 4 with 4 rbi's and Horner was 2 for 4 with a rbi.

The Polar Bears of Floodwood put up a much better fight on Tuesday night as it took the Eagles 8 innings to chalk up their eighth win of the season.

Kendall had a fine showing on the mound and had his best stuff working, holding the Bears to only 3 runs on 4 hits. Floodwood's left handed hurler had the Eagle bats baffled for the first 7 innings before the Eagles lit up the top of the eighth for 8 runs and the victory.

Kemper, Kendall and Murphy all had 2-out hits to drive in runs in the top of the eighth and Mulligan capped the scoring with a 3 run blast to left.

The Eagles will play seven of their final nine games at home.

Tonight the Eagles will host Greenway, then travel to Mt. Iron-Buhl on Friday. Monday, May 10 they host Cass Lake-Bena and Friday the 14th will at home against Upsala.
