Leona passed away on March 11, 2019 at the Omaha Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Omaha, NE where she resided with her husband James (Jim).

Born Leona Alyce McKeig to the late Edward (Ed) & Mabel (Hampl) McKeig in Superior, WI on May 15, 1930. She married James Melvin O'Neal on May 2, 1953. Leona worked for the USDA Forest Service, Chippewa National Forest from 1961 until she retired in 1986.

She was a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. Jim & Leona resided in Federal Dam, MN until moving to Omaha, NE in 2012. Leona is preceded in death by her brother, Monte McKeig; Grandson, Joseph Nemecek and great-grandson, Hunter Watts. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, James; sister, Nancy (McKeig) Early; sister-in-law, Cecelia (Cec Wattles) McKeig; daughter, Shirley Ann (Gene) Benson; son, Patrick James (Ethel or Sug Winger). Grandchildren; Michelle (Chris), Nicole (Kevin), Matthew (Melissa), Shannon, Chrissy and Courtney (Paul). Fourteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
