He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1961 to 1964 as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic. Leo met his wife Marilyn while he was stationed in France. They enjoyed dancing and foot races under the Eiffel Tower during their courtship. They were united in marriage in 1965.
Leo was a truck driver in the Twin Cities for 17 years before he moved back to the Remer area. He and his brother Larry started L & L Logging and stayed in business for 20 years. Leo spent his retirement caring for Marilyn and still found time to enjoy the outdoors. Throughout his life, Leo spent most of his free time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, trapping, picking berries, snowmobiling or 4-wheeling. He greatly enjoyed taking people from Remer out on guided snowmobile and 4-wheeling trips to out of the way places.
Leo, also known as "Jaws" or "Toe", had a quirky sense of humor and liked to talk backwards and mix up his words just to get people to laugh. He enjoyed dining and traveling with his wife in his later years.
He was a member of the Boy River American Legion, NRA and the Eagles Snowmobile Club.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Marilyn; brother, Harold "Eddie", and sister, Julie Emerson.
Leo is survived by his five children, Wanda (Dave) Mullen, Deanna Jewett, Deborah (Steve) Richerson, Carolyn (Lance) Jewett-Daniels, and Brant (Katie) Jewett; 10 grandchildren; siblings, Frances (Ronald) Williams, Larry (Sharon) Jewett, Gary (Diane) Snakenberg, Warren (Patricia) Jewett and Laurie Hare; step-mother, Dorothy Jewett.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for both Leo and Marilyn will be Friday, October 23rd from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. Memorial Service at the Congregational Church in Remer, MN. Rev. Bruce Pound will officiate.
Arrangements are with Rowe Funeral Home and Crematory, Grand Rapids, MN.
