Lady Eagles split coming off holiday break

Following the holiday break, the Northland Lady Eagles returned to the hardwood hosting South Ridge High School. Despite a three point halftime lead, the Lady Eagles were unable to contain the Panther offense in the second half and fell 58-74.

"We played a great first half. The bottom line is that we are missing three players that are key to our team and our bench is very light right now. Hats off to these girls for stepping into roles they may not be completely ready for and giving me 110%.

It was a game that we controlled until about seven minutes left. Unfortunately, a key player, Kali Wake, fouled out and we just didn't have as good of control over the game. They played a nice game our bench just wasn't big enough tonight." Commented Head Coach Jen Kovall.

Kristine Johnson posted a season high 33 points and eight steals on defense. Kali Wake put in 12 points and came down with six boards. Toby Soyring added 11, freshman, Maddy Greene put in eight points, nine boards and nine steals. Taylor Tschida added 4 points and five steals.

The ladies would next take a bus ride to Greenway for a conference match-up against the Raiders. Following a disappointing loss to South Ridge, the girls came to play and dispatched the Raiders 52-38.

"This was a physical game with our small bench, the girls played well together when we really needed the win. All their hard work is paying off. Toby played an excellent game again, once a bench player has turned into a starter and is earning herself a lot of court time." Said Coach Kovall.

Johnson led the charge with 21 points, six boards and nine steals. Wake followed with 13 points and seven rebounds; Greene added four points, five rebounds and seven steals; Tschida put in four points and three take-aways; Soyring put in two points but dominated under the boards with 15 rebounds.

The girls will host Hill City Jan. 17 and Bigfork on the 19th. They travel to Nashwauk-Keewatin on Jan. 24th. Games start at 5:45 for JV and Varsity games tip off at 7:15 p.m.

Note: At press time, Kali Wake is 34 points shy of 1,000 career points.[[In-content Ad]]
