Lady Eagles lose heartbreaker to Warriors then finish season strong

The Northland Lady Eagles wrapped up their season last week with a pair of wins and a pair of losses to cap off what could be called an educational season. The ladies began the season struggling to put up good percentage shots and keep a solid handle on the ball. As the season progressed, Head Coach Jenny Kovall instilled lessons that paid dividends in the latter half of this season and got valuable experience moving into next season.

The girls began their final stretch against Deer River on February 18. In a nail biter of a game, the girls led through the entire contest, except the final two seconds. With a late 3-pointer the Warriors brought the game within one, but a loose ball foul put them on the charity stripe for two shots, they both fell and the girls lost by one 46-45.

"This is disappointing to say the least,' commented Coach Kovall, 'it's a game we controlled and should have won."

Kali Wake put up a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds while Chloe Wolske led with 18 points, five boards and eight steals.

The Lady Eagles bounced back on Feb. 24 with a tight road win over the Blackduck Drakes 72-70. Wolske again led on offense putting up 25 points and six steals. Kristine Johnson added an even 20 points and six take-aways, while Maddie Shepard chipped in a dozen and Keyanna Gross rounded out the top scorers with 10, and 10 rebounds.

"Maddie (Shepard) is only playing a half, but has really stepped up her play to contribute so much when she comes in," praised Coach Kovall.

Wolske finished the game 14 for 19 from the free throw line to put the game on ice for the Lady Eagles.

Only one night later found the ladies on the road again, this time to Pine River. Despite playing well for the majority of the game, taking the lead for a time in the second half, the Tigers went on a 17 point run late in the game to the final score of 50-33.

"We played well with them, we went on a 10-0 run to take the lead, but then we had a let-down and gave up 17 quick points that we could not come back from," commented Coach Kovall.

Wake led with a dozen points and eight boards, followed by Wolske with 10 points and four rebounds.

In the regular season finale, the girls hosted Cass Lake. With five girls in double-digits on offense and fewer turnovers than they have had in many games, the girls posted a 72-66 victory over the Panthers.

"It was a nice game by all my girls, and a really fun way to end for parent's night. I'm really proud of their hard work and all the improvement they've made over the past months," said Coach Kovall.

Wolske led with 16 points; Angie Rajdl put in 13 and nine rebounds; Gross added 12, with 8 boards; Shepard chipped in 11, while Wake carded 10 points and seven rebounds.[[In-content Ad]]
