Lady Eagles get the basketball season underway
With only two starters returning from last season's roster, the girls were looking to see who was going to step up and fill the shoes of the retiring seniors. The girls battled hard all night, but came up short at the final buzzer 62-52.
"We got the first game hype and jitters out of the way," said returning Head Coach Jenny Kovall.
"We have some good shooters, but had some problems finding the basket tonight."
Senior Sierra Likens was forced to sit 12 minutes of the first half, having found herself in foul trouble. Still she was able to find the bucket to lead the team with 16 points, a pair of rebounds and, continuing from last season, 6 steals.
"It changes the tempo without her (Likens) in the game. She really came on strong in the second half," commented Coach Kovall.
"This was a tight game all night, we were only down one basket at halftime, we lost some good rebounders from last year's team and need to find a way to get more second chances under the basket."
Following Likens was Lizzie Procopio with 10 points and 3 boards. Nikina Gross and Kori Dunham chipped in 8 points and 5 boards each. Abby Burch had 3 steals to go with 4 points and Tori Howard and Brittney Nornberg each added 3.
"This team has a lot of potential, give us a little time and fewer snow days and I think we can surprise a lot of teams," concluded Coach Kovall.
The girls will get a chance to get their first "W" tonight (Tuesday) when they travel to Deer River. Varsity game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
