Lady Eagles fall in first round to Royalton

The fifth seeded Northland Lady Eagles entered the first round of playoffs Thursday night against the number four seed, Royalton. Despite only a 10 point halftime deficit, the girls were unable to mount a second half comeback and fell 43-69.

"We missed numerous close opportunities in the first half and a hand-full of free throws and at halftime we were only down 10, we were still alright. I knew that we had to score the first few buckets in the second half, but they scored the first five points and it seemed like it was all up hill from there," commented Head Coach Jenny Kovall.

Abby Burch again led the scoring with 17 points, eight boards and 3 take-aways on defense. Nakina Gross stepped up with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Chloe Wolske dropped in six points, five rebounds and four steals. Lizzie Procopio added four points to the total and eight boards.

"Royalton is a very veteran team with eight seniors. They play solid defense and were tough on the boards. Kori (Dunham) was ineligible for the game and that really hurt us. We were a younger team than normal out there with only a little time to prepare, the girls played hard and I'm proud of their performance.

I believe these kids will work hard over the summer and come back stronger and more experienced next season. Thanks to all the fans and parents for your support, also the band for all the great music and support you have all given the team all season long!" Concluded Coach Kovall.

Retiring seniors this year are Co-Captains Kori Dunham and Nakina Gross. Coach Kovall will have a young, but more experienced team to work with next season as Procopio and Burch will both be in senior leadership roles. Wolske, who will be a Sophomore next season, gained valuable Varsity experience this season and will be a strong presence at the guard position.

Despite their first round playoff loss, the Lady Eagles and Coach Kovall have much to be proud of. Early in the season, the girls struggled with turn overs and consistency, costing themselves several victories in the process. Discipline and hard work paid dividends as the girls gained consistency and confidence winning six of their last seven regular season games entering the playoffs. Coach Kovall has given the Lady Eagles a good foundation to build a successful 2012-2013 season.[[In-content Ad]]
