Lady Eagles drop season opener in Deer River; bounce back with pair of wins

The Lady Eagles opened their season on the road against the Deer River Warriors. First game jitters played into a slow first half with the girls down by six at halftime. Turnovers led to easy Warrior points and as the final buzzer sounded, the ladies found themselves at the tail end of a 43-66 final score.

"We had way too many turnovers - we have much to improve on, but I have a great group of hard working ladies and I have no doubt we will get to where we need to be." Commented Head Coach Jen Kovall.

"Missing three-year starter Maddy Shepard with an ACL injury hurt and we hope for her speedy recovery. Her leadership on the floor is invaluable to our upcoming players."

Alexis Cash led the offense with 14 points and eight boards; Kali Wake posted 13 points, six rebounds and seven takeaways on defense; Kristine Johnson added eight points, eight boards and nine steals; and Taylor Tschida posted four points.

The Eagles next traveled to Wrenshall in what might be called an epic turnaround from opening night. Wake displayed her Senior Captain leadership posting a double-double effort on 26 points, 13 boards and six takeaways on the Lady Eagles road to a 90-41 lopsided victory.

"This was a fun game for the girls, we don't get these kind of wins very often," said Coach Kovall.

Johnson was unable to take the floor due to a concussion suffered against Deer River.

Cash posted 19 points and nine rebounds; Tschida added 19 points; Maddy Greene put in 12 points, five boards and eight steals; Jessica Kuck knocked down seven points and came away with six rebounds; Jade Nicazio added four points and five boards and Emma Mix chipped in three points.

The Lady Eagles hosted their 2016 home opener against Nashwauk in what can best be described as a true team effort. The ladies put five scorers in double digits, downing their conference foe 61-36.

Wake led the charge with 11 points, 10 boards and four steals. This was her second double-double in as many games - nearing her 1,000 point mark. Cash put in 14 points, six rebounds; Kuck added 13 points and seven boards; Tschida put down 12 points, five boards and five steals, and Johnson rounded out the top scorers with 11 points and four takeaways.

"This was a good effort from the entire team and a great conference win for us," commented Coach Kovall.

"We have our toughest game ahead of us this Friday against Bigfork, we have a week to get prepared - we know what we have to work on and improve upon. I know the ladies are looking forward to the match-up." Concluded Coach Kovall.

The Eagles travel to Bigfork Friday, then host Carlton on Monday, December 19. Christmas break will give the Eagles some extra time to rest up before returning Jan. 2 at Cass Lake-Bena. Games start at 5:45 p.m. with Varsity tip-off at 7:15 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
