Knowledge is key to safety on ATVs

To the Editor,

As Volunteer DNR Trail Ambassadors and Youth ATV Safety Instructors, my husband and I appreciate the fun that riding atvs can be. It was with significant sadness that I read the front page of the June 12th Press-Citizen where two articles described the life changing and life ending accidents that involved youth in recent ATV accidents in our community. Although not illegal for a youth under 12 years old to drive on private property, the importance of a driver appropriately fitting the machine is emphasized by the deadly outcome. An unlicensed driver under the age of 16 operating a side-by-side on a county road is against Minnesota Law.

Youths, parents, grandparents, family members, and friends of children and youth who ride atvs, please familiarize yourselves with Minnesota Laws and safe riding practices! Require these youths to take an ATV Safety Class (adults please join us) and always follow the law and safety practices. Information about Minnesota Laws, the on-line course, and upcoming hands-on youth classes are available at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/vehicle/atv/index.html#calendar. We want everyone to enjoy riding, but it is only fun when the day ends with a little dirt, mud, and everyone is safe![[In-content Ad]]
