Kitchigami seeks funding increase
The county will pay $342,336 in 2015. The request for 2016 is $358,479.
Cass has branch libraries in Pine River, Longville, Walker and Cass Lake. Each of those cities is being asked to increase their contributions to the library system by 5 percent in 2016.
Kitchigami also provides outreach via bookmobile services to Remer, Leader and Hackensack.
Cass County Board referred the Kitchigami request to the county's citizen budget committee to consider with other requests for the 2016 county budget.
Cass will receive a $1,296,169.26 state payment in lieu of taxes this year. Of that, $162,459.90 will go to the county natural resources development fund, $119,580.05 will be divided among townships and $1,014,129.31 will go to the county general fund.
The county also will receive $146,611.50 state wildlife management lands payment in lieu of tax.
That distribution will go as $97,413.72 to the county general fund, $2,605.93 to the unorganized township fund, $18,345.96 to the organized townships where state wildlife management areas are located and $28,245.89 to school districts.
The county board awarded a contract Tuesday to Schrupp Excavating, the lower of two bids received, to provide taconite tailings at $25 per yard needed to repair a roadbed and washouts on a road in Moose Lake Township where the county has awarded a logging contract.
The project is not to exceed $2,100, plus applicable taxes. The logger will be responsible for spreading the taconite and making the road repairs.
The board also awarded a contract to Ruyak Enterprises Inc. for a maximum of $13,158, plus applicable taxes, to replace two culverts under the Soo Line recreational trail in Lima Township.
Cass County sold 12 of 14 tracts of timber offered for sale at a July 30 auction. Loggers paid $223,466.65 for 8,380 cords of wood and a small amount of red pine saw logs.
Loggers paid the most, $36.89 per cord, for the 2,674 cords of red oak sold. They paid $28.67 per cord for aspen. Second publication rights after Brainerd Dispatch.[[In-content Ad]]
