HOWA Family Center scheduled to close in 2016
Tuesday, the county board referred to the budget committee an evaluation of whether the county should continue funding family centers at the same level in 2016, considering that the funding level was designed to help five family centers. Now, there will be only three.
The centers offering family support continue to operate at Pillager, Pine River and Remer.
The Cass Lake family center closed a few years ago.
The HOWA family center is seeking to have other agencies assume some of the programs it has offered, including winter wear and share, kinship, snack packs and the clothing depot. The HOWA has operated since 1997.
Cass County has renewed a service agreement with Minnesota Department of Human Services for the county to continue providing Minnesota Family Investment Program services to low-income families through 2016 and 2017.
Cass County Economic Development Corporation has hired a new executive director Jaimee Meyer of Bemidji.
The EDC announced its annual dinner meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Chase Hotel and Conference Center in Walker. Chet Bodin, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development northern regional analyst, will be keynote speaker.

Auditor-Treasurer Sharon Anderson reported Tuesday the county earned $728,979.08 interest on investments through September this year or 81 percent of the anticipated amount for the full year. This is well above the $560,204.38 the county earned in the same period of 2014.
