Herman was born April 24, 1922 in Clear Lake, Minn., to Herbert and Bertha (Peters) Hohlen. He grew up and attended school through the eighth grade in Clear Lake and then went to work to help support the family by helping on the farm, and working on the traveling thrashing crew. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served our country from 1942 - 1945. After completing his military duties he worked at various jobs before attending Barber School and subsequently barbering for the next 20 years in Elk River, plus traveling to St. Francis and Becker once every week. In 1971 he began working in Security for FMC in Fridley, a job he held until his retirement in 1984. Shortly after he retired he moved to Longville and has lived there until the present.
Herman was always community minded and was actively involved in the Boy Scouts, the Hunter Safety Program, and the Eagles. His military service to our country remained very important to him, and was a proud life member of the VFW, and American Legion in Elk River, Longville, and Pine River. He was awarded the American Legion Americanism Medal, and recognized as a Cass County Outstanding Senior Citizen. He was also an active member of Central Lutheran in Elk River, and Salem Lutheran Church in Longville. Herman enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his membership at the YAH Club in Longville. Herman will be remembered as a man who gave generously in his care for others, and one who lived life with a grateful attitude.
