Grant was born February 13, 1927 in Remer, Minnesota to Edwin and Mabel (Peterson) Waterhouse. He attended school in Longville and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He served on the USS TERRY stationed out of San Diego, California. In addition to his service medals he also earned the title of "Middleweight Boxing Champion" in his fleet. After completing his military duty he attended Dunwoody Institute for two years studying auto mechanics.
Grant waited tables at Charlies Café prior to beginning employment at Horner Waldorf Paper Company in St. Paul. He spent his entire career there, working his way up from a crane operator to the Plant manager. He retired in 1988 and moved back to Thunder Lake where he enjoyed his retirement years.
Grant was an outdoorsman and excellent marksman, having a special passion for fishing and duck hunting. He also enjoyed figure skating, archery and coaching hockey and baseball. People loved Grant and were drawn to his quick wit, and positive, happy outlook on life. He had a great memory for lyrics, especially of songs from his childhood. He knew what he stood for and never wavered on the important things. He will be remembered as a great Dad, grandfather,and best friend.
Grant was a member of Salem Lutheran church in Longville, and was the Thunder Lake Township Board Chairman for many years.
Grant is survived by his son Bill (Andrea) Waterhouse, two granddaughters, Jennie and Stacy, great granddaughter Paige, step grandchildren; Cadra Hebert, Phil and Matt Bettenburg, three brothers; Chuck (Dot) Waterhouse, Bob (Elaine) Waterhouse, Ed Waterhouse, sister-in-law Betty Waterhouse, best friend and caregiver, Mary Jacobson, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ardis, sister Fern, brother Del, and sister-in-law Lorna.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Longville with Pastor John Monson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery with military honors provided by the Longville VFW Post 772. The Dennis Funeral Home of Longville assisted the family in making service arrangements.
