Gnythe Frances Clark
b. 1916 - d. Sept. 26, 2010
Gnythe was born in St. Paul, MN in 1916 to Robert and Minnie Horton. The summer she was one-year old, Gnythe moved with her parents about a mile outside of Remer. They lived in a tent while her dad cleared the land and built their log home. Her dad won the land in a poker game, a factor that undoubtedly influenced his decision to settle in Remer. Gnythe grew up with 8 siblings on the 160 acre farm.
She graduated from Remer High School in 1934 and worked at Huffman's Resort on Boy Lake for the summer. It was while waitressing at the Remer Hotel that she met, and later married the man of her dreams, Stanley J Clark, who came all the way from Arkansas to find her. Clark was working for the Civilian Conservation Corp at the time and was stationed at a camp in Boy River. Their love blossomed at first meeting at a local dance, and they were inseparable for nearly 65 years, until Clark passed away in 1999.
Stan and Gnythe owned several small businesses during the early years of their marriage, and Gnythe later worked at Smokey's Café and the Remer Trading Post until her retirement in 1975.
Cooking, baking and raising beautiful flowers kept Gnythe busy during her retirement years and she won dozens of awards at the Harvest Festival for her canning, baked goods and flower arrangements. In 2009, she was one of the Grand Marshalls for the Harvest Festival, an honor she accepted with wit and charm.
Content and thankful for her good health and longevity, Gnythe remarked often that there was very little she would have changed about her life. She married the love of her life and enjoyed raising a family in Remer, close to her mom and several siblings. In later life, she enjoyed entertaining the grandkids and great grandkids with stories about her youth and with rides in her golf cart. She found joy in every day.
Gnythe was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Stan; eight siblings; and most of her high school classmates and friends.
She is survived by her four children: Shirley (Dick) Stenerson of Cohasset, Minn., Cheryl (Kane) Hoversten of Zimmerman, Minn., Kathy (Randy) Burch of Remer, Minn., and Jim (Connie) Clark of Walker, Minn.; seven grandkids and six great-grandkids; and a special little dog named Murray
Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 2nd at 1:00 PM at the Congregational Church in Remer. Rev. Sheila Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Remer. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home of Grand Rapids, Minn.
