Eagles wrap up regular season, enter playoffs
Coach Shepard and Kunnari stated, "we just didn't play good as a team as a whole." Both coaches went on to say that you hope those type of games don't happen but we're all human and it was just one of those nights that started bad and we weren't able to recover. The players weren't happy with their performance and voiced it after the game and vowed to redeem themselves.
On October 2, the Eagles hosted Isle for Parent / Senior night where the Eagles eventually fell 66 to 20.
"The score really didn't depict the game," Coach Kunnari stated. "We had held Isle on three consecutive drives defensively where we had an opportunity to cut the lead to 12 before half. Unfortunately we weren't able to capitalize on an opportunity shortly before half and Isle punched in a late first half touchdown to go up by four scores." Coach Shepard responded by saying that really took the momentum away that the team had started to build prior to the half ending. But the entire coaching staff was very pleased with the teams performance and effort on this night. The coaches stated Isle is a very good football program that is ranked fairly high in the State in 9 man football as was Nevis the week before. The difference this week against Isle is the team played hard, tough nose football and battled every single play. It was a huge improvement from the week prior and when it really boils down to it all you can ask of the players is to give it all they can for 48 minutes.
On Wednesday, October 7 the Eagles traveled to Bigfork for the final regular season game of the year. The Eagles trailed late in the game down 13 to 6 with just over a minute left in the game where they found themselves in an all too familiar position. The Eagles had sustained a drive down inside Bigforks 12 yard line with 1st down and 12 yards to go to have a chance to win the game. Unfortunately the Eagles fell just short of putting the ball into the end zone for a chance to win the game with a two point conversion. It was one of their best defensive games of the year and have really started to come on since the Isle game with the intensity that is needed to play aggressively. Offensively the Eagles marched up and down the field all night but untimely penalties, unable to convert on a few 4th downs and just a few turn overs prevented the Eagles from putting up a minimum of three additional touchdowns.
Both Coach Shepard and Kunnari commented by saying we have moved the football on almost every team this season with the exception of Nevis. As a team we have been inside the 20 and 10 yard line more times than we want to count and haven't been able to come away with any points.
The entire coaching staff believes we have found the solution to remedy this problem entering the playoffs. Unfortunately when your rebuilding a program the players have to experience things the hard way sometimes in order to learn and grow from them. Everyone is 0 and 0 entering the playoffs. The coaches and players believe we are a very capable team that can compete and beat any team in our section for the reason the team has stayed focused, positive and have continued to work extremely hard.
At press time the final seeding for the playoffs have yet to be determined. Unofficially it appears the Eagles with travel to Culver to face off against South Ridge High School on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:00 pm. Check the school website which will also have the game location and time posted by Monday.
At this time the coaching staff would like to take the time to thank all the individuals and organizations that have contributed to the team, we hope to see everyone at the first round playoff game supporting the boys as you have all season. The boys will do their best to extend the season as long as possible for the fans and the community that has given them so much support. "Go Eagles!"[[In-content Ad]]
