Eagles push to 3-2 for the week behind improved pitching

The Boys started with a pair of games in the Hill City Tournament on Saturday, April 25. A 10:00 a.m. game against the host Hornets proved to be the closest game of the day as the teams battled through an extra inning affair.

Cooper Kovall started for the Eagles and allowed just one run through the first seven innings. With the Eagles down 1-0 headed into bottom of the seventh the boys tied the score and had the winning run on third base but were unable to get him across to finish off the Hornets. In the 8th the Hornets were able to push across five for a hard fought 6-1 victory over the Eagles.

Next up was a game for 3rd place against the Northeast Range Nighthawks. Zack Greene toed the rubber in this one and kept the Nighthawk batters off balance all game and the Eagles bats came alive as they took the game 13-3 in five innings.

Coach Shepard noted that the Eagles defense played very well in both games and his pitchers both showed good control for most of the games they pitched. "Both Zack and Cooper are sophomores and are showing much improvement when they are given the ball."

After taking those two steps forward the Eagles travelled to Littlefork on Monday April 27 to face the Vikings. A quick 6-0 start may have been the undoing in this one as the boys' intensity and focus may have let up a bit and too many mental and physical errors allowed the Vikings to come all the way back and take the lead 11-7 heading into top of the seventh. Stringing together five straight hits had the Eagles back to within one, 11-10 with runners at the corners with two outs. On this night the comeback was not completed as the game ended with tying and go ahead runners on.

"Way too many mistakes and errors cost us this game, we just fell apart after the third inning. We will be addressing these quickly as the practices we have remaining are limited due to the busy schedule over the remaining four weeks." Shepard offered after the game.

Thursday, April 30 had the boys on the road again to Cherry. After a couple hard days of practice the boys were more than ready to play a game and get the sour taste of the Littlefork game out of their mouths. A quick start was needed and that is what they got with 2 runs in the first as they cruised to a 14-1 victory over the Tigers behind Kovall.

After a week on the road, the Eagles would host Mountain Iron- Buhl (MI-B) on Friday, May 1. Justin Wicks took to the mound and battled his way through some early inning defensive errors and control problems, but some nice plays by the team behind him kept the Eagles ahead or tied throughout. After MI-B tied the score at 3-3 the Eagles came right back and pushed across a run in the next inning to lead 4-3 going into the 6th. Good defense and pitch strikes.....seems easy enough and the boys were able to do this as they held on for the 4-3 victory.

"We have seen that these guys can play good baseball, we need to keep cutting down those mental lapses and keep up swinging the bats and these kids will continue to keep seeing wins."
