Eagles open 2016-17 season at 2-4


The Northland Eagles returned to the hardwood behind Head Coach Chris Carlson Dec. 5th fielding a young and somewhat inexperienced team. Three seniors return for the 2016-17 season, Zach Greene, Cooper Kovall and Zain Myers. Sophomores Kane Perkins, Dane Sepin and Lucas Dougherty. Freshmen Cameron Wake and Jacob McKeig round out the lineup.

The boys began the season on the road against the Wrenshall Wrens. Offensively the Eagles put all three seniors in double digits scoring in a close battle finding the Eagles on the short end of a 79-82 final score.

Greene led the offense with 30 points and five assists, coming down with five rebounds; Myers followed with 19 points and Kovall with 15 points, 10 boards and seven blocked shots.

The Eagles next traveled to Hill City looking for a win to right the ship. Four starters in double digits was enough to topple the Hornets 69-55.

Greene again led with 21 points and six boards; Kovall posted 17 points and 13 rebounds; Myers put in 13 points and eight boards; followed by Wake with a dozen.

On Dec. 10 the boys hosted their home opener against Lakeview Christian. Despite a tight halftime score Lakeview was able to extend the lead to a final 59-87.

Despite shooting 6-22 from the field, Greene was able to post 21 points. Kovall followed with 16 points and 10 boards while Myers added 12 points and six rebounds.

The Eagles next matchup was a home encounter with the Cherry Tigers. The boys again put four players in double digits and came away with a 85-36 mauling of the Tigers.

Kovall led the charge with 24 points and a dozen boards followed by Greene with 20 points and eight assists. Wake and Myers added 16 points each.

After evening the record at 2-2, the Eagles traveled to Walker to take on the WHA Wolves. Weak shooting from the field put the Eagles in a hole they were not able to crawl out of and fell to the Wolves 49-80.

Greene put in 17 points and came down with six boards; Myers added 13 points and Wake 11.

Carlton traveled to Remer on Dec. 19 and handed the Eagles a second straight loss despite Greene's 31 points, the boys fell to the Bulldogs 105-87.

Myers put in 27 points and came down with eight rebounds and Kovall added 23 points with 12 boards in the effort.

"We're playing good ball for the first half, but we're running out of gas down the stretch," commented Asst. Coach Matt Kunnari.

The Eagles will take a break for the holidays and return to the court on Jan. 3 when they travel to Floodwood and Bigfork on Jan. 6.
