Eagles fall to Hornets 34-8
After receiving the opening kickoff, the Eagles first offensive series ended in a fumble near midfield. The Hornets took advantage and drove down and punched the ball in and added the 2-pt conversion for the early 8-0 lead.
The second Eagles series ended with a punt that took a Hill City bounce and was scooped up by an alert Hornet and returned for a TD to put the Hornets up 14-0.
The ensuing series ended on an interception deep in Eagle territory and the Hornets quickly scored and added another 2 pt conversion to go ahead 22-0 midway through the first quarter.
Both defenses controlled the second and third quarters as neither team could muster a score.
Starting the 4th quarter still down 22-0 the Eagles passing attack finally hit on a deep pass as WR Zak Nornberg broke open down the middle, QB Marcus Woods hit him in stride and Nornberg took it the distance on a 79 yard scoring strike. The 2 pt conversion was a keeper by Woods making it 22-8.
The big play ignited a fire in the boys, but the Hornets put together a scoring drive of their own which was helped along with some penalties by the Eagles to increase the lead to 28-8. The Eagles valiantly tried to mount an attack, but the Hornet defense kept the Eagles hemmed in. A final tally by the Hornets with less than a minute to play ended the scoring at 34-8.
As frustrating as the game was for the Eagles, the team played hard throughout the game. Coach Hasse was pleased with how physical the boys played and thought it was their most physical game of the year. Senior Jesse Horner led the team in tackles with 11 (2 for losses). Defensively the Eagles had numerous "gang" tackles as the team swarmed to the ball.
The offense managed to put up 264 total yards of which 183 came on the ground led by Marcus Woods with 120. Starting halfback Evan Daudt was unavailable a good portion of the game due to injury and an injury to OL TJ Mitlying hampered the offensive attack as well.
With three games remaining in regular season, the boys have shown stretches where they are capable of playing with any team in the area. Keep up the intensity, eliminate some small mental lapses and this team will be more than just competitive in every game the rest of the season. They expect to win and will.
