Eagles drop two coming out of holiday break

Coming off the Christmas break, the Northland boy's basketball team faced two of the better programs in Class A northern Minnesota basketball over the last few decades in the Nevis Tigers and the Bigfork Huskies.

On Thursday the Tigers visited the Eagles and the game was back and forth throughout. The Eagles managed to take a lead early in the second half, but Nevis went on a 13-0 run to give themselves some breathing room. The Eagles were not done, as they managed to pull within five behind some tough baskets by Kane Perkins and a couple of late three pointers by Alec Wake but in the end Nevis held on for a 63-54 victory. Perkins lead the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Alec Wake added 15 points off five 3-pointers and Cameron Wake played another solid all around game with 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The following night the Eagles headed to Bigfork to play the high flying Huskies. Again the Eagles played a tough game and managed to take a second half lead only to be done in by another late surge by their opponent. The Eagles handled the Huskie pressure in the first half and only trailed by two at the break. A strong start in the second half propelled them to a brief second half lead, but the length and pressure of the Huskies proved to be too much as the Eagles fell 81-64 in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.

Coach Chris Carlson commented that, "We need to find a way to stop these second half runs. The kids are starting to realize we can play with most teams, but now they need to learn how to finish."

Kane Perkins was again the leader in scoring with an efficient 24 points on 10 of 13 shooting and pulled down five boards. Cameron Wake followed that up with 10 points four rebounds and six assists. Carson Johnson, who has been solid as the Eagles 6th man, contributed 10 points off the bench.

The Eagles travel to Ogilvie on the 11th for an out-of-section contest.[[In-content Ad]]
