After an eleven day layoff, the Eagles took to the floor on Friday, December 27 to face the Wolverines of Wadena- Deer Creek. Rust did not seem to be an issue for the Eagles, but an extremely hot shooting Wolverine squad was. Add in two players still out with injuries (Seniors Jordan Perkins and Austin Likens) the Eagles knew going in they needed to play almost perfect basketball to pull out a victory.

W-DC was hot early and often in the game, knocking down numerous 3-point shots. Midway through the first half the Eagles were hanging tough and were down only 21-14 with 9:30 left. The Wolverines would score 24 of the next 34 points in the half, and took a 51-29 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles played a much more competitive second half, but could never mount a run to get back into the game as they ended up on the short end of the 88-63 final score and put them in the 3rd place game on Saturday against the host school Sebeka Trojans. Gary Gross turned in another brilliant offensive night putting in 24.

Against Sebeka, the boys would again put up a terrific effort, considering that a third starter (Junior-Gary Gross) was sitting on the bench unable to play due to an injury during the W- DC game the day before.

After scoring the first hoop of the game, the Eagles would not put up another point until eight minutes remained in the first half. The Trojans led 20-2 at this point, but the pesky Eagles kept chipping away and at half were down 29-14.

The boys came out of half and started chipping into the lead and slowly whittled it down to 36-28 with about seven minutes remaining. Over the next few minutes the Eagles once again struggled with shots falling and Sebeka expanded the lead to 46-31 with 3:30 to go.

The defense picked up some key steals over the next few minutes as the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to close within seven at 46-39. That was the closest the Eagles would get, as they fell 50-39.

Coach Carlson, although disappointed with the losses, was upbeat with the overall effort of the team. "We put in some kids with very limited varsity experience (freshmen Cooper Kovall, Zach Greene; Sophomore Benji Swankier & Junior Jarod Stefan) due to our injuries and the experience they gained now will be beneficial for our whole squad for the remainder of the season. We knew going in against Sebeka we had to keep the score low and stay within striking distance. On the defensive end we got what we wanted but we couldn't buy a basket during the first 10 minutes of the game."

Senior Zak Nornberg, gave his usual defensive performance snaring rebounds and grabbing many steals. Fellow senior, Easton Wake, picked off numerous errant passes against the Trojans, while Junior Justin Wicks steadied the defense in the paint.

With 17 games remaining on the schedule the Eagles need to keep their heads up as soon the injuries will have healed and the squad should and will string some victories together.
