Eagles close week with a pair of wins

By Scott Wicks- | Comments: 0 | Leave a comment

The final week of regular season had the Eagles split their four games, going 2-2, losing to Blackduck and Chisholm before closing out the week with a pair of wins against Cass Lake.

Against Blackduck on Tuesday, May 19, the Eagles dug an early hole they could never get out of as the visiting Drakes capitalized on some early control problems and jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. The Eagles tightened things up over the final four innings but the bats never could come through with some clutch two-out hits as the stranded eight runners on base over the first five innings. The final score would end at 11-3, but the Eagles know they had let chances to make things interesting slip away in this one.

Coach Shepard "Blackduck took advantage of our early miscues and we could never get that hit that you need when facing good teams." Blackduck earned the #1 seed in Section 8A East tournament that will start on Tuesday, May 26.

A trip to Chisholm on Wednesday was next as the Eagles looked to end their three game skid. A quick run in the first and a defensive hold had the Eagles up 1-0 early. The Chisholm pitcher had the Eagles number as they only managed to get one more run in a 6-2 loss. "Justin (Wicks) pitched a good game for us (1 earned run), but it was one of those nights when things didn't click for us. We tried some guys in different positions tonight, and got some game experience for some backups, so hopefully this will help us as we head into the playoffs." Said Shepard.

A Thursday doubleheader at home against Cass Lake would close out the regular season for the boys. The first game had the Eagles methodically put runs across and Zach Greene pitched a nice game as the Eagles would win 18-2. The night cap would provide the home fans with plenty to cheer for as the Eagles would pound out 21 hits, with Mike Johnson getting the W in a 34-7 win.

"We needed this tonight, the guys needed to relax and enjoy themselves a bit. It has been a bit of a struggle as of late as either we weren't pitching, hitting, fielding or a combination of two of the three in the previous four games and this was a good wind down for us. We will have three practices before Tuesdays playoff game and will have the boys as ready as they can be."

The Eagles earned the #4 seed in the subsection tournament and will open up at home versus Lake of The Woods on Tuesday, May 26 at 4 p.m. The winner of the game will then play a 10 a.m. game at Bemidji State University against the winner of the Blackduck vs. Laporte/Red Lake game.

Next up for Eagles- Tuesday, May 26 at home versus Lake of the Woods- first round of Section 8A East Sub-section- 4 p.m. in Remer

Hope to see you at the Game!
