Eagles battle a long week, finish on a high note

The Eagles had a busy week with seven games scheduled in six days. Of the seven games, five were against teams with over .500 records, and five on the road.

The week started with Mesabi East coming to town to play the host Eagles. Mesabi has a solid team year after year and this season is no different. The Giants starting pitcher kept the Eagles hitters off balance all night enroute to the 7-2 victory. Managing only three hits in the game the offensive highlights were slim. Defensively the boys played a fine game behind starting pitcher Austin Likens who went the distance.

Tuesday May 14 had the team on the road to Deer River. After playing a fine defensive game on Monday, the ball seemed to bounce past an Eagle on every hit as they committed eight errors in the game. Starter Zak Nornberg once again pitched well enough to keep the team in the game, but on this night it was not enough as the eagles fell 14-3 in 5 innings. Offensively, both Gary Gross and Logan Gross were 2-3.

The Eagles once again hit the road on Thursday to play a game in Chisholm and a night game in Nashwauk. Against Chisholm, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but the Bluestreaks battled back against starter Justin Wicks as walks and errors once again plagued the Eagles. At the end of 4 innings the boys were down 8-4, but a different attitude was in the dugout on this night as they kept battling back before coming up 1 run short in the 9-8 loss. Marcus Woods 2-3, Patrick Kemper 2-4, and Zak Nornberg (4 runs scored) led the offensive attack.

Arriving in Nashwauk for a 7:30 game, the boys (and a few faithful fans) were treated to a rare game under the lights. The two teams battled through a finely played game, but again the Eagles came up a run short in the 3-2 loss. Nornberg pitched a complete game and allowed only 6 hits throughout, but the Spartans clumped them together to get 2 runs in the first and a walkoff single in the bottom of the 7th to send the Eagles to their 4th straight loss. Austin Likens and Patrick Kemper were both 2-3 to lead the team in hitting. The loss puts the Eagles record at 2-6 on the season.

Friday, May 17 brought the Tigers up from Pine River to take on the Eagles. Gary Gross made his first varsity start on the mound and pitched very well, going the distance. The Eagles led 1-0 after 2 innings before the Tiger bats struck for 3 in the top of the third and one more in the fourth to lead 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Northland plated two in the 5th, a scoreless 6th led to an exciting finish as the Tigers pushed across 2 in the top of the 7th to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom half. The Eagles, as they have been doing as of late, never quit battling and scored twice and had the tying run on second when the game ended 6-5 for the third straight 1 run loss in two days. Defensively, two errors along with Gross' solid pitching performance kept the Eagles close all game. Offensively, Evan Daudt 2-3, Logan Gross 2-4 led the team with Nornberg and Likens both collecting 2 RBI.

To close out the week the boys left Remer at 6:30 a.m. for a twin bill in Littlefork against the Vikings. Austin Likens took the mound in the first game and scattered 6 hits through 6 1/3 innings to pick up the 10-3 win for the Eagles. The game was scoreless through 3 innings until the Eagle bats finally woke up as they knocked in 3 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth and added 5 in the 6th. Nornberg 3-4, Wicks 2-3 and Likens 2-5 paced the attack with Gary Gross adding 3 RBI and Wicks 2 RBI. A rare steal of home by Nornberg highlighted the scoring in the 5th inning.

Littlefork- 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 - 3

The Vikings pitcher shutdown the Eagles in the second game, 9-0 loss. With only 5 hits and 4 other baserunners in the game, the Eagles offense sputtered. Logan Gross was 1-2 with two walks to lead the meager attack. Wicks got the start and pitched well through 4 innings, trailing only 4-0. After playing a strong first game defensively, the boys committed 8 errors in the second contest. Maybe the early morning and the easy win in the first game had the Eagles a bit overconfident as their focus seemed a bit off in the loss.

EAGLES- 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 0

Heading into the final week the Eagles record is at 3-8 on the season. Tuesday, May 21, the boys host the Blackduck Drakes for their final home contest at 4:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
