Eagle offense grounded by Tigers

Trying to break a two game winless streak, the Eagles (1-4) hit the road and travelled to Nevis (3-2) to take on the Tigers last Friday. The Tigers were a state quarterfinalist last year and on a 2 game win streak, having defeated their previous 2 opponents by a combined 76-6.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff and drove down the field in just over a minute to take a 6-0 lead on a 5 yard run.

Turnovers, which are key in any game, seem to always hit the Eagles in bunches, as three consecutive drives ended in turnovers leading to Nevis touchdowns. With 11:23 remaining in second quarter the Tigers held a 24-0 lead.

As we have seen before, the Eagles got up, regrouped, did not feel sorry for themselves, continued to play hard and mounted a drive midway through the second quarter that ended with Freshman Cooper Kovall (replacing Marcus Woods who was injured in 1st quarter), tossing an eight yard TD pass to Jarod Stefan. Another pass to Justin Wicks from Kovall for the 2-pt conversion brought the score to 24-8, with 6:56 remaining in the half.

The Tigers put another touchdown on the board before half and led 32-8 at intermission.

The 3rd quarter saw the Tigers add two more TD runs to push the lead to 44-8.

Midway through the 4th quarter the Eagles put together a long drive that had Evan Daudt running hard, as he always does, and going over for the score from 8 yards out to cap the evenings scoring at 44-14.

Even with the loss, the Eagles continue to show signs of improvement each week. Players that are stepping in to either replace an injured teammate or sub in for a starting player have shown that they are very capable of helping this team out.

The defense, has played as physical as their opponents recently, but just seems to have a missed assignment here and there that gives up a big play that negates the previous two good plays. Offensively, early miscues have put the team in deep holes the last two weeks, but the team has been resilient and played nearly even with their opponents in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters. This week amassing another 360 total yards of offense. Clear up the 1st quarter turnovers, put together 3 good consecutive defensive plays per series and the Eagles will give any team it plays, all it wants the rest of the season.

The Eagles play their final home regular season game this Friday at 7:00 p.m. against Kelliher/Northome. Come out and cheer on the Eagles!
