Doug was born on his parent's homestead and raised in Longville, MN, the youngest of ten children. While attending highschool, he played baseball, football, and basketball, and worked as a lumberjack. He continued to play basketball in the US Army and also earned an Expert Carbine Rifle Metal on the firing range. While home on leave in the Army, he met and instantly fell in love with the love of his life who 3 years later became his wife of a full 61 years of marriage. While in the Army, he worked in the Machine Records Unit and helped to develop some of the technology that pioneered the computer industry in which he continued his career thru the years until his retirement as Manager of Computer Systems and Operations at Blandin Paper Co. His hobbies included: golf, chess, hunting, and was an avid Boundary Waters canoeist even before it officially became the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
