Don was born November 3, 1936 to Sylvester and Laura Sommers, in the sandy hills between Kimball and Fairhaven on a fierce, fall blizzard day. He attended school in Kimball, graduating in 1954. In the fall of 1957 Don enrolled in St. Cloud State University. On December 28, 1957 he married Dorothy Leaf in St. Louis Park. Don graduated from SCSU with a degree in elementary education and took a job in Hibbing, teaching sixth grade in Cobb-Cook school. In the fall of 1961 Don and family returned to St. Cloud where he took a job at Garfield School until Westwood School was built. He taught at Westwood until his retirement in 1992. He was fiercely proud of the students, parents, faculty and staff that graced the halls of his beloved Westwood.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, sporting events and spending time with his family. He was very vibrant, outgoing and a great story teller.
