Don was born on December 24, 1928 in Osseo, MN to Gertrude and Donald Gervais. He is survived by two of his five siblings, Bevelyn Gervais Keith and Charlotte Gervais. Opting for a GED over the classroom, Don exhibited a spirit for entrepreneurship early in life. His varied business endeavors included cement contracting, house painting, manually digging out basements, rare coin dealing, retail wig shops, a restaurant, and a real estate brokerage. He owned the Longville Body Shop and Carwash in the 1970s and 1980s.
To his great fortune, Don met Emily Plumb in 1953 following his service in the Korean War. The couple spent nearly 60 years setting the example for a perfect marriage until she passed away in December 2012, breaking his heart. He is survived by two children with Emily: Donald, Jr., and Charlene as well as daughter Dianne Otto from an earlier marriage. He was infinitely proud of his six grandchildren Sandra, Salome, Rachelle (1978-1991), Jessica, Cheri, and Chris as well as his ten great-grandchildren.
Don wintered in Mesa, Arizona and enjoyed many great friendships and card-game rivalries there. He loved his adopted hometown of Longville which he referred to as "God's country." The good people of Longville will undoubtedly miss his keen wit, active sense of humor and sporty driving skills. Don would certainly be very pleased to learn that his score of "29" in cribbage (the odds of which are 216,580 to 1) played at the YAH Club last summer is now published in the newspaper.
A memorial gathering and internment is tentatively planned for May 2017 at Rice River Cemetery in McGregor, MN. Details will be published in this publication at a later date.[[In-content Ad]]
