Do you have a reason to Relay?
To the Editor,
The Relay For Life is a overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Teams consist of eight to fifteen members and each member is asked to raise $100. A $10 donation allows the donor to dedicate a luminary in memory or in honor of a cancer survivor
We have 11 team captains and team members looking forward to warmer weather and the fast approaching Relay For Life. The team captains are busy preparing for the Relay and planning their campsite activity. There will be future articles about the food or activities at the campsites this year.
Lifetime risk refers to the probability that an individual over the course of their lifetime will develop or die from cancer. In the United States, men have a slightly less than a one in two lifetime risk of developing cancer; for women, the risk is a little more than one in three. My time is well spent raising funds NOW for future research, advocacy, education, and services that can give my loved ones less of a risk to develop cancer in their lifetime.
This is my 8th year working on the Pine River-Backus Area Relay For Life and 18th overall. Every year there seems to be new incentive to keep working on it. I have lost family members and special friends to this disease over this timeframe. I also have met many survivors and they are the source of hope and inspiration to me.[[In-content Ad]]
I recently found out that a former co-worker has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She has two elementary age daughters and has always been a ball of energy. I know that if anyone is up to battling this awful disease that she will do so head on. Cancer knows no race, nationality, sex, or age. We need to keep up the fight to find the cure!
We have had excellent support from the business community over the past years with Hunt Utilities Group, LLC leading the way. They have been a $1,000 Corporate Sponsor annually. The economy has been hard on many area businesses, so the donated amount may be less, but the support is still there for this community event. All of our sponsors are greatly appreciated!
Team captains and members will be submitting their stories in the weeks to come before the Relay on why they participate in the Relay. The first article is submitted by Evelyn Burley - it is short, but right to the point.
The teams will be writing about their reasons to Relay - do you have a reason to attend the Relay? We hope to see you on June 17th!
