Deep Portage Learning Center Saturday Programs schedule


HACKENSACK - Deep Portage Learning Center and Conservation Reserve has announced its schedule of Fall Saturday Programs. Everyone is invited to come out and participate in these fun, informative, family-friendly programs. Please call (218) 682-2325 for reservations.

•September 25 and October 9 - Tower Hike, 10 a.m and 1 p.m. Fee: $5 Enjoy spectacular views from the Deep Portage Tree Top Tower. The tower climbs 55 feet to an observation platform that brings you above the forest canopy for clear viewing.

October 16 - Orienteering with Map and Compass, 1 p.m. Fee: $5 Tune up your orienteering skills just in time for hunting season. This program is geared for all experience levels. Topographic map reading, compass use, and dead reckoning experience will be covered.

October 23 - Sight in Your Rifle, 1-3 p.m. This is a free program. The Deep Portage rifle range will open to sight in your firearm for hunting season.

October 29 (FRIDAY) - Bill Staines Concert and Dinner, 5:30 p.m. dinner, 7 p.m. show. Fee: $12 adults, $8 children & seniors. Reservations are required.

November 13 and 20 - Climbing Wall, 1 p.m. Fee: $10 per climber. Deep Portage's climbing wall is 35 feet tall and is the perfect challenge for all abilities. Age/Size requirement: 8 years and up.

December 4 - Snowshoe Weaving Workshop, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (lunch provided). Fee: $140 per snowshoe set; $7 lunch only. Deep Portage staff will lead you through weaving a set of snowshoes. The frames are ash with nylon webbing as the weaving material. There are two styles to choose from: Ojibwa or Green Mountain. Please visit the Deep Portage website or call for more information.

Critter Art Contest - Deep Portage is seeking black ink drawings of wild animals, fish and birds that are native to the north-central Minnesota area. The winning artist's drawing will be featured on Deep Portage's 2011 critter art mugs. Please send your drawings to Deep Portage Learning Center, 2197 Nature Center Drive NW, Hackensack, MN 56452. The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2010.

Deep Portage is located 10 miles east of Hackensack, off County Road 46. Open to the public, it offers more than 18 kilometers of hiking/cross-country ski trails, an interpretive center to explore, and educational programming year-round. Visit the website www.deep-portage.org.
