After a thorough rout of Bug-O-Nay-Gee-Shig and Greenway, the Lady Eagles encountered a seasonal foe that decimated their ranks, the flu.

Last Tuesday had the girls on the road to McGregor in a non-conference match-up. With half the starting lineup less than 100 percent, the girls fell to the Merc's 73-37.

"We played a solid first half against a highly ranked team, but sickness and foul trouble in the second half didn't leave us much to work with," commented Head Coach Jenny Kovall after the game.

Despite sickness, Abby Burch still managed a respectable 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lizzie Procopio added eight points and four boards while Makendra Anderson chipped in a half dozen points.

"We lost Chloe (Wolske) in the second half to the flu, we played the best we could and got out of there," said Coach Kovall.

Still battling the bug, the girls traveled Thursday to Bigfork to take on the Huskies.

In a classic example of "beware of the walking wounded," Burch led the team with 27 points and eight rebounds in the girls losing effort 55-46.

With two starters out sick, Coach Kovall was forced to dig a little deeper into the bench, starting 8th graders Kristine Johnson and Kali Wake.

"Kris and Kali did a great job in their starting role, it was fun to see!" Commented Coach Kovall.

Procopio added eight to Burch's 27 points, helped out by Wake and Keyanna Gross with a pair of buckets each.

"We were already low on players, Abbi was still suffering but she came and played her heart out, she looked awful but insisted on playing. I'm really proud of her, she is a perfect example of toughness for the young players to see. Makendra added solid defense throughout the game. I'm also proud of Lizzy, she showed great leadership and hustle all night, a well rounded game. Afterward, I gave the girls practice off and hope to return next week sick free!" said Coach Kovall.

The girls next play tonight in Nashwauk-Keewatin, on Thursday they host East Central and Monday they travel to Nevis. Varsity tip-off is 7:15 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
